Conspiracy Theory
The debate had its usual ups and its downs
October 6, 2002
there was mention of Wilson, a few verbal frowns,
Transcendence and Gloom and Utopia too
and then unexpectedly something quite new.
For Peter, in typical puzzling style
changed the subject to donuts and grapes for a while.
Only then gadfly Wallace, on seeing the note
suspected that Peter had sent it to gloat.
His imagination thus filled to the brim,
he jumped in to conclude it was all about him.
There are many conspiracies round us, I know --
of lawyers and Congress and corporate dough --
and there might even be one of bachelor cooks
who receive from young maidens agreeable looks.
Yet I've never heard tell of a Donut Affair,
and while in these times we sure ought to beware,
it's nice to know some quarrels can end with a smile
and a few witticisms served up in fine style.
So the future may not be so dismal in scope --
for where we find humor and laughter there's hope. :-)
