Day of Remembrance

by Amy Belding Brown

September 11th

All our lives we will remember
something of that clear, bright day
when the sky rained human ashes
and took our innocence away.

One year later we still wander,
stunned by threat to hope's empire.
Walls still fall around us, burdened
with the weight of flesh and fire.

Yet risen from the smoking embers
compassion, phoenix-like, still stands.
For we best honor those who perished
by joining ours to other hands.
