On Meekness

by Amy Belding Brown

Meekness does not seek to teach,
but only to be taught.
Meekness does not legislate
or require perfected thought.
Meekness calls no other foolish;
it does not chide or blame.
Meekness stands inside a silence
that the proud can never name.
Meekness does not draw attention;
it's an unselfconscious art.
Yet it's readily discerned by
the compassion at its heart.
So if you want abundant life --
as meek ones testify --
before you correct another's flaws,
take the beam from your own eye.
