Mr. Fix It

by Amy Belding Brown

Henry was a fix-it man
repairing chairs and doors,
replacing missing latch hooks
and the squeaky boards in floors.
How nice we still have with us
among those so well-read,
friends who keep an eye on problems
and follow in his stead.
But, in Henry style, I'm thinking
that while fixing things is grand,
what good is it to repair clocks
and neglect an outstretched hand?
The only kind of fixing
that evokes my joyful sigh
is the kind a loving parent does
wiping a young child's eye.
For the fixing that this old world needs
isn't done with hammer and nail --
it's accomplished with compassion
and Love that will never fail.
