On Inspiration

by Amy Belding Brown

Inspiration's overrated
when it comes to art.
The muse serves least those dreamers
who wait on her to start.
If you would be an artist
prepare yourself with care
for you'll follow a hard master
neither generous nor fair.
Gird your loins with courage
and arm yourself with thought
for this path will take you surely
to a place you never sought.
Prepare to lay your life down
in service to your task
since absolute devotion
is the price the muse will ask.
