Thoreau

Human Behavior

by Amy Belding Brown

I've likely been on
Walden List much too long --
my posts turned to lament
when they started as song.
The discussions now sound
to my ears all the same,
thoughts bouncing in circles --
a monotonous game.
The notable impact
of Emerson's gift
to Henry's perspective
is given short shrift,
while abstractions abound
and mythology too,
and we offer our insights
as Thoreau's private view.
Yet, I know very well
these are good people here
of praiseworthy wisdom
and remarkable cheer --
men and women who know
that life's not about wealth
or corporate ladders
or even good health.
They know, as do most of us,
deep in our heart
that simplicity's truth
is both ending and start.
So forgive my complaint
in a moment of irk
and permit me to rest
for a while in deep lurk.
