The Consciousness of Stones

by Amy Belding Brown

Just because stones
are so often ignored
doesn't mean they like it.
Why do you think they
throw themselves down mountains
and form long lines in fields?
Why do you think
they place themselves
so strategically
in the beds
of small children
and elated rivers?
Why do you think
they invade your house
and curl up in your shoes
and chase you so furiously down
every road you travel?
Why do you think
they shiver when you step on them?
Stones want to be noticed
like everybody else.
So pay attention to stones,
give them your respect
and concentration;
love them, if you can.
Remember, they've been around
a lot longer than you have.
They can tell you things
you never dreamed
about determination. ;-)
