Thoreau

Sage Brush and Huckleberry Emerson

by Amy Belding Brown

Some have a knack for language
and for seeming in the know;
some like to change direction
of a conversation's flow.
Some wield their definitions
with a wizard's sleight-of-hand
and choreograph contention
according to their plan.
But while cleverness has able legs
which some may want to follow,
for me this skipping-stone-approach
to debate just rings hollow.
I will confess, however,
that it often brings a chuckle,
and reaffirms my fondness
for the berry we call huckle. :)
