A Little Objectivity Goes a Long Way
Some words are like snowflakes --
February 9, 2000
so frail and unclear --
the more that you poke them
the more they disappear.
Under the microscope
of studious mind
they slip and they slither
and vanish, I find.
Just take the example
of ob-jec-tiv-i-ty.
What seems certain to you
may well elude me.
And what I perceive
doesn't enter your brain
if your thought's on a fast track
to meet the next train.
In this dynamic world
full of diversity,
we all must learn lessons
of real empathy
by admitting we're bound
in a sensory mesh
that confines our knowledge
to the limits of flesh.
Objectivity's transient --
hoarfrost in the sun --
which is not to say
that we can't have some fun
tossing concepts around
like colored balloons.
But by this point we're starting
to resemble cartoons.
